Louisiana State University Alexandria Shatters Enrollment Goals Amid National Higher Ed Crisis

Louisiana State University of Alexandria has defied national trends with explosive growth that positions it among the fastest-growing universities in the South. The institution enrolled 7,684 undergraduate students for Fall 2025, dramatically exceeding its original goal of 5,000 students by more than 2,600 enrollments.

Remarkable Six-Year Transformation

When Chancellor Paul Coreil returned to lead LSUA in 2019, the university served 3,285 students. The ambitious target of reaching 5,000 students by 2025 seemed optimistic at the time. Instead, LSUA surpassed that milestone two years early, then continued its meteoric rise:

  • Fall 2023: 5,104 students (goal exceeded)
  • Fall 2024: 6,815 students (33.5% year-over-year increase)
  • Fall 2025: 7,684 students (12.8% increase, 134% total growth since 2019)

“We are thrilled to welcome almost 7,700 students to LSUA this fall,” said Abbey Bain, Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement. “This milestone reflects the incredible momentum and excitement surrounding our university.”

Dual-Track Growth Strategy

LSUA’s success stems from strengthening both its physical and digital presence. On-campus enrollment reached 3,035 students (up 11.6% from Fall 2024), while online enrollment exploded by 38.3% in a single year, adding 1,286 students. Online programs now represent nearly 60% of total enrollment, primarily serving local, non-traditional students balancing education with careers and families.

The university also celebrated its largest freshman class since becoming a four-year institution in 2001, with 691 full-time first-year students—an 18.9% increase from last fall and 58.5% growth since 2019.

Swimming Against the Current

LSUA’s ascent contrasts starkly with national higher education trends. According to the Hechinger Report, U.S. colleges now close at approximately one per week, up from just over two per month previously. Nearly 10% of four-year institutions face financial peril, with experts warning of accelerating closures and mergers.

Small regional colleges, which serve as critical community anchors, have been particularly vulnerable. LSUA has bucked this trend by leveraging affordable tuition, career-aligned programs, and strong local partnerships. The university has created over 100 new positions in the past 18 months to meet enrollment demands.

Signs of Broader Recovery

Public confidence in higher education may be stabilizing. A 2025 Gallup poll found 42% of Americans express “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in colleges and universities, up from 36% in 2023-2024. Those with “very little” or no confidence dropped from 32% to 23%—the first measurable increase in public trust in over a decade.

“Public confidence in higher education is beginning to rebound, and that’s because of institutions like LSUA that are deeply embedded in their communities and delivering on their mission,” said LSU Interim President Matt Lee. “Students vote with their feet and parents vote with their pocketbooks—and they’re choosing LSUA because it delivers excellence.”

LSUA’s strategy aligns with student priorities: clear workforce pathways, personal faculty attention, and affordability—factors increasingly critical as families scrutinize higher education’s return on investment.

Bottom Line: While colleges nationwide close at unprecedented rates, LSUA has achieved record enrollment of 7,684 students—154% of its 2025 goal—through strategic focus on online programs, affordability, and career-aligned education.
